The South West Ministry Training Course is an ecumenical training organisation offering theological courses in Devon and Cornwall. The courses are accredited by Durham University
SWMTC’s aim is to participate in the mission of God by providing the church in the South West of England with high-quality theological education, formation and research for those seeking to explore or deepen their experience of the Christian faith, along with those preparing for ministry in the church.
New Encounters in Theology
New Encounters in Theology is a course, open to all, studying the ideas that have shaped contemporary Christianity and considering its greatest challenges. It is a rolling 2-year programme of evening classes, open to anyone, of any faith or none, and is taught in Devon and Cornwall. These can be built up into a Durham University award or can be done for fun. The modules can be started at the beginning of a term and can be studied individually or in a series. No prior qualification is required except a keenness to learn! Those studying for credits must have access to a computer and be able to use it. Subjects include studying the Bible - Old and New Testaments, Christian Doctrine based upon the Apostles’ Creed; Christian Ethics and moral philosophy; sacraments, ecotheology and ecojustice; 20th century theology and the history of Christianity.
Training for Licensed Ministry
SWMTC offers part-time training for Ordinands and Readers within the Church of England. Ordination candidates are sponsored by the dioceses of Truro, Exeter and Bath & Wells. Readers are sponsored by the Diocese of Exeter. The courses are taught locally in Exeter, Plymouth and Truro by means of evening classes, residential weekends, study days and local tutor groups. Readers are awarded a Certificate in Theology, Ministry & Mission and Ordinands usually attain a Diploma in Theology, Ministry & Mission, with the option of progressing to BA honours degree. These awards are validated by the Common Awards programme of Durham University and the Church of England.
Foundations in Christian Ministry
From September 2016, SWMTC will deliver a new one-year formational programme for lay Christian disciples throughout the Diocese of Exeter who seek to explore their vocation in community with others.
Do you ever wish you knew more about your faith? Have you ever wondered about how we got our Bible? Do you wish you could answer your neighbours’ questions with more clarity? Do you feel you could be more active in the life of your church if you knew more? We offer a suite of training materials, including the popular Exploring Christianity course and Pilgrim. Exploring Christianity is lay discipleship course of home study and tutorials for people in Devon, who want to explore faith, deepen their commitment and learn together with other interested students.
Post licensing Training
Further study is offered for ordained ministers, including modules in reflective practice for ministry for new curates, ministry projects, and dissertations. These provide an opportunity to gain a BA in Theology, Ministry & Mission.
